Artwork Blanked Out at Library, CampusDate posted: December 01, 2010
Category: Campus Events
In order to draw attention to diminished Art Education programs in primary and secondary schools, the Omicron Lambda chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Glendale Community College is hosting a WEEK WITHOUT ART from November 29 through December 3 as well as a FESTIVAL OF ARTS on Saturday, December 4 from 10 until 2.
According to a recent survey by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, more than 134,000 Arizona students attend schools every day with no access to arts education taught by a qualified teacher. Only 55% of schools provide the required instruction in music and visual arts while 21% of schools reported no arts classes or courses for students. 50% of schools reported a budget of $0 to curricular support in arts education. 79% reported spending less than 1$ per pupil per year or less than 1/2 of 1 cent per day. Art is not stressed as important to students in Arizona, with only 39% of schools weighing arts courses equally with other academic subjects and only 12% weighing advanced arts courses equally with other advanced academic courses. In order to draw attention to this reality and to try to offset its negative impact, Phi Theta Kappa at GCC (PTK) is covering up select pieces of the art collection in the library and on campus with black fabric. The PTK student organization encourages students, faculty and staff to provide feedback via the comment cards available in the Library and Student Union.
At the end the week, the "Festival of the Arts" for elementary school children celebrates the value of Art by allowing the children the opportunity to participate in the making of a variety of art projects.
