The mariachi sound is the heart and soul of Mexicoand a form of music that today is enjoyed throughout the world. In this down-to-earth program, mariachi aficionado Cornélio Garcia introduces viewers to the music, history, and cultural importance of mariachi bands in Mexico and elsewhere. Whether they are marching in a parade, performing onstage in a restaurant or at a fiesta, or even serenading mourners at a funeral, mariachis bring pleasure to all who hear them. The renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán is spotlighted.
In existence for more than a century, the Mexican corridoor música de la frontera, as it has also come to be knowncontinues to be met with enthusiasm on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border. Filmed on location in Mexico and San Diego, this program showcases performances of the following songs: Terrible Cuerno de Chivo, by Los Sierreños; Ezequiel Rodríguez, by El Palomo y el Gorrión; Operación Pesada, by Los Tucanes de Tijuana; Las Monjitas and El Mexicano Mojado, by Grupo Exterminador; and Contrabando y Traición, Pacas de a Kilo, Jefe de Jefes, De Paisano a Paisano, and Somos Más Americanos by Los Tigres del Norte.
