Reading A Catalog Record

When searching for an item, the first screen will provide a list of all the results, or 'hits' that match your terms; clicking on one of the titles will then take you into the detailed record with specific information on the item, including a table of contents, as well as the location and availability of the item:

Clicking on Table of Contents will take you to a new screen which provides more information on what information is found in the book, and a listing of Subject Terms that you can click on in order to advance to a new results screen with a list of items that have those subject terms in their descriptions.

 

 

 

   

 

This detailed record is taken from the results of a search on 'stem cell research;' looking at the sample detailed record provided above, notice that there are some important item information such as:

• Location:   this shows which library carries the item listed;
• Call No.: this is the location, or 'address' of the item in the library;
• Publication Type: this indicates the format of the item: book, DVD, VHS, Government Document, etc.
• Status: whether or not the item is 'in' and available for checkout; also indicates which section of the library the item is located;
• Retrieve Catalog Item: this link allows you to click on Request Item in the event that it is checked-out and you want to place a hold on it once it is returned.
