Upon publication, Huckleberry Finn was banned by Concord Public Library (and others) because it "deals with a series of adventures of a very low grade of morality; it is couched in the language of a rough dialect, & to sum up, the book is flippant and irreverent in its style & and it is trash of the veriest sort." In 1998, the US Court of Appeals in San Francisco rejected a request to remove Huckleberry Finn from the required reading list at a school in Tempe, Arizona following charges that the book is a "racist book" and that the "school district was racially insensitive for not removing it". Information

Award Description
The Library of Congress, the worlds largest repository of knowledge and information, began a multiyear Celebration of the Book with an exhibition on Books That Shaped America. The initial books in the exhibition are included here. This list is a starting point, said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. It is not a register of the best American books although many of them fit that description. Rather, the list is intended to spark a national conversation on books written by Americans that have influenced our lives, whether they appear on this initial list or not.
